Sree Rama Jaya Rama!

Sri Rama Navami is celebrated on Chaitra Masa (Month) Suklapaksha Navami as a festival. Lord Rama was born on this day. From my childhood days, I love this festival very much for two reasons. One is, Panagam (a sweet drink prepared on this day with jaggery, water, cardamom and little bit pepper) was given as thirtham in my hometown temple. I used to drink 2 or 3 glasses of panakam as this is my favorite drink. Another reason is, I was born in the same nakshatra (star) of Lord Rama’s birth star i.e. Punarvasu Nakshatra. To mark this festival as important in my life, I am starting a new section for mantras and slokas on this day. I usually recommend my clients to chant specific mantras and slokas as a remedy to ward off evil effects and to get peace and prosperity in their life. General mantras and slokas can be chanted by anybody except few specific mantras. The below are the three mantras of Lord Rama, which are easily chanted by anybody and get the blessings of Lord Rama.

Sri Rama Navami Pooja at my home

Mantra No.1The greatest mantra is chanting “Rama” nama (name). In other words, start chanting the name ‘Rama’ and repeat the name 108 times or 54 times according to your convenience.

Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama ……………………….

Mantra No.2

If the Readers and Clients are comfortable with few more words, they can chant the below mantra.

Sree Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama
Sree Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama

Mantra No.3
This mantra/sloka is recommended by Lord Eeswara (Shiva) and it is mentioned in Padma Purana. It should be chanted in devotion and with pure mind.
Sreerãma Rãma Rãméthi Ramé Rãme Manoramé
Sahasra Nãma Thatthulyam Rãma Nãma Varaanané

[The simple meaning of the above sloka is, Chanting of divine name of “Sri Rama” is equal to chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama (one thousand and eight names of Lord Vishnu)]

Lord Rama in Astrology:

Lord Rama is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and belongs to Surya Vanshavali (Sun dynasty). According to Sage Parashara, Lord Vishnu’s Nine Avatars (incarnations) are related to nine planets. Lord Rama is related to Planet Sun. Hence, by chanting Rama nama, we can please the Sun God.Procedures to be followed during Chanting of Mantra:

  • Take bath before sitting for Chanting. Morning time is the most preferable time.
  • Sit comfortably on a Mat or on white cloth facing east or north direction for more effectiveness.
  • Repeat Mantra for 108 times. Repetition of Mantra can be increased according to your convenience.
  • Your devotion and concentration on God is more important than the number of repetition of mantras.

  1. Is there a preferred time to start such a sadhak? I am a big devotee of Hanumanji but I also love and feel a strong affinity for Ramaji as well. I am just learning of many mantras and unfortunately live in America and have limited access to Gurus. Also is it ok to do multiple mantras? Eg I was doing Gayatri Mantra 108 daily but I caught Covid and had to stop due to extreme coughing and fatigue. I have not yet started again because I want to ensure I start on an auspicious date…?

    1. Starting “Rama” Mantra is preferred on Punarvasu Nakshatra as it is the Janma nakshatra of Lord Sri Rama. Mantras are the words consisting of Beeja letters like Hreem/Sreem/Hum/aim etc. Mantras with Beejas should be taken from Guru only. However, general mantras like “Sree Rama Jaya Rama …..” and other saathvik mantras can be chanted without Guru’s advice. It is not advised to do multiple mantras at a time. If you have got Gayatri mantra from Guru, you can chant it daily. You can restart chanting this mantra on any sunday or on ekadasi.
