Twelve houses in Vedic Astrology

One of my reader asked me the following question after reading the post – Rahu Ketu in vedic astrology
 
Question: How do i know , whether Rahu in 3rd house, 6th house or in 11th house and what is the meaning of houses in the horoscope?
 
It is a good question indeed and i take this opportunity to explain about houses to all my readers.
 
Our Zodiac system is divided into 12 signs or Rasis of 30 degrees each. Each sign is called as a House or Bhava (in sanskrit). In our horoscope, there are 12 houses. Lagna (Ascendant) is the first house in our horoscope. It is also called as Thanu bhava. Each house has its own significations as follows:
House Name of the Bhava Significations of the house
First house Thanu, Lagna bhava Self, physical body, health, general character, fame, appearance, vitality, success or failures, head
Second house Dhana bhava Wealth, speech, family, education, gold, silver, vision, source of death, face
Third house Bhrathru bhava Courage, younger brothers / sisters, communication, short travels, ears, neck
Fourth house Sukha bhava Happiness, mother, vehicles, friends, education, landed property, chest, lungs
Fifth house Putra bhava Intelligence, wisdom, children, mantra, spiritual matters, fine arts, love affairs, poetry,music, fame, heart
Sixth house Runa, Roga, Satru bhava Diseases, Enemies, Debts, Obstacles, Worries, Accidents, Mental afflictions, Service, Punishment, Maternal uncle, Stomach
Seventh house Kalatra bhava Wife, husband, marriage, marital happiness, trade, partners, foreign travels, sexual diseases, urinary organs, kidneys
Eighth house Aayur bhava Longevity, unearned wealth, dangers, punishments, fraud, insults, wounds, private (sexual) parts
Ninth house Pitru, Bhagya, Dharma bhava Dharma, religion, spiritual, Charity, fortune, god, luck,foreign journeys, prosperity, pilgrimages, father, thighs
Tenth house Karma bhava karma, occupation, name and fame, respect, trade, commerce, status, honour, power and authority, knees
Eleventh house Labha bhava profits, gains, wealth, elder brothers / sisters, society, legs
Twelfth house Vyaya bhava losses, expenses, foreign travels, bed comforts, loss of spouse, moksha (death), foot
